SkyPath

Weather IntelligenceData Analytics & AI Platforms

SkyPath, a Tel Aviv company, predicts turbulence up to 24 hours ahead by combining motion data from pilots' iPads with an AI model. United Airlines and Japan Airlines are among its users.

Founded in 2015 with 51 to 200 staff, it sells an electronic flight bag app for pilots, a dispatch tool and Nowcast. The Weather Company has built SkyPath into its Fusion and Pilotbrief products since 2023. Its claims of 90 per cent accuracy and 50 per cent fewer turbulence encounters are its own.

United, Japan Airlines and Silver Air were confirmed as users by Business Insider in July 2026. It competes with IATA's Turbulence Aware, used by about 30 airlines, and with tools airlines build themselves.

SkyPath Nowcast

A global AI/ML turbulence nowcasting platform providing a 12-hour lookahead with worldwide coverage, including clear-air turbulence zones where conventional forecasting typically performs poorly.

The problem it addresses

Enables pilots and dispatchers to anticipate and reroute around turbulence, including clear-air turbulence, up to 12 hours ahead, improving safety and reducing fuel burn from reactive diversions.

Key features
  • 12-hour turbulence forecast lookahead with global coverage
  • Clear-air turbulence (CAT) detection via crowdsourced EFB iPad accelerometer data
  • Fusion of EDR avionics data and ADS-B positional feeds
  • Continuously updated global turbulence heat map
2 more features
  • Tactical and strategic alert layers for cockpit and dispatch use
  • Software-only solution requiring no hardware installation
Technical specifications (3)
  • Software-only SaaS platform with no hardware requirement
  • Crowdsourced data collection via iOS SkyPath EFB App on pilot iPads
  • EDR and ADS-B data ingestion via cloud API

SkyPath EFB App

Pilot-facing iOS application that serves as the primary crowdsourced data collection and situational awareness interface for the SkyPath platform.

The problem it addresses

Gives individual pilots cockpit-level turbulence situational awareness while passively contributing to the crowdsourced data network that underpins the global nowcast.

Key features
  • Live turbulence heat map overlay on navigation charts
  • Haptic and visual alerts for upcoming turbulence zones
  • Passive accelerometer-based turbulence reporting to the SkyPath network
  • iOS-native application for iPad EFBs

SkyPath Dispatch

Ground-based dashboard for airline operations control centres giving dispatchers access to the SkyPath turbulence nowcast ahead of and during flight. Enables proactive rerouting decisions before departure and supports in-flight trajectory adjustments via ACARS or datalink communication.

The problem it addresses

Enables flight dispatchers to make proactive turbulence avoidance routing decisions rather than reactive ones, reducing exposure to moderate and severe turbulence across the airline's network.

Key features
  • Dispatcher-facing web dashboard with live turbulence heat map
  • Pre-departure route analysis against forecast turbulence
  • In-flight rerouting support via datalink integration
  • Fleet-wide turbulence exposure monitoring

Register notes

Market context

SkyPath sits in the growing crowdsourced aviation weather data market, where platforms compete on network size (more aircraft reporting = better data) and forecast accuracy.

With over 30,000 pilot subscribers, SkyPath has reached a scale at which its crowdsourced EDR and accelerometer network provides coverage density that is difficult for later entrants to replicate quickly.

The clear-air turbulence differentiator is commercially significant: CAT is invisible to radar and causes a disproportionate share of turbulence injuries.

Business impact

Enables proactive turbulence avoidance for both individual pilots in the cockpit (EFB App) and airline operations centres (Dispatch), reducing the reactive rerouting cost and improving safety outcomes.

The crowdsourced network creates a data flywheel: more subscribers generate more data, improving forecast accuracy, which attracts more subscribers.
