BlueWX

Weather IntelligenceData Analytics & AI Platforms

BlueWX, a Tokyo spin-out from All Nippon Airways and Keio University, forecasts turbulence with deep learning. In August 2025 ANA became the first airline to use such a service in line operations.

Founded in July 2023 and led by Kaz Watanabe, the company has fewer than ten staff. Its model is trained on about a decade of turbulence data and, by its own account, scored about 86 per cent accuracy on test data. Warnings go to flight crews and dispatchers ahead of time, and the company is extending the platform to wind forecasts for route planning.

Provides flight crews and dispatchers with high-accuracy advance turbulence warnings to improve safety, reduce passenger injuries, and enable fuel-efficient avoidance routing.

Key features
  • Deep-learning model trained on approximately ten years of historical turbulence data
  • Validated operationally with over 2,500 All Nippon Airways pilots prior to commercial launch
  • Deployed in ANA line operations from August 2025
  • 86% turbulence prediction accuracy reported on test dataset
1 more feature
  • Cloud-based integration with airline weather data infrastructure
Technical specifications (2)
  • Cloud-based SaaS delivered to airline weather infrastructure
  • Deep learning inference on historical and real-time atmospheric data feeds

BlueWX Wind Forecasting Service

An extension of the BlueWX deep-learning platform applying the same modelling approach to wind and direction forecasting for route planning. As of 2025, BlueWX was expanding the product for airline flight planning integration; commercial deployment details had not been publicly disclosed at time of research.

The problem it addresses

Provides high-accuracy wind and direction forecasts to support fuel-efficient route planning beyond the turbulence prediction use case.

Market context

BlueWX operates in the aviation weather AI market at a point when airlines are under significant pressure to reduce turbulence-related injuries and their associated liability costs.

The NTSB estimates turbulence accounts for the majority of serious in-flight passenger injuries annually.

BlueWX's ANA and Keio University lineage gives it both operational validation and academic credibility that pure software startups typically lack at early stage.

Business impact

Operational deployment with ANA, the first airline to use the service in line operations, provides direct validation of the 86% accuracy figure.

Reduced turbulence exposure translates to lower passenger injury rates, reduced crew workload on avoidance decisions, and marginal fuel savings from proactive rather than reactive rerouting.
