Beacon AI

Air Traffic Management

Beacon AI, a San Francisco Bay Area company, builds Murdock, an AI assistant that runs checklists, procedures and performance calculations alongside the pilot in real time.

It has about a dozen staff and roughly 20 million US dollars of funding, including a 15 million Series A in October 2024 led by Costanoa Ventures with JetBlue Technology Ventures. Lighthouse, its second product, monitors fleet status before and after flights.

Its named contracts are US military research awards: 3.8 million US dollars for AI pilot assistance with Air Force Special Operations Command in 2024, plus smaller US Air Force and SOCOM awards in 2022 and 2023. No commercial customer is named.

No verified deployments yet

Beacon AI is profiled in the companies register, but no deployment has been verified against published evidence. Records are added as evidence is reviewed and graded.

Murdock

Murdock is Beacon AI's flagship in-cockpit AI pilot assistant, described internally as 'R2-D2 for pilots.' A software-first, hardware-light system providing real-time pilot augmentation including safety net functions (checklist and configuration management), coaching (procedures and efficiency guidance), and superhuman capability augmentation (route optimization, diversions, and performance calculations).

The problem it addresses

Cockpit workload overload, pilot decision-making under stress, data overload in the flight deck, and the safety gap between existing Level 1 autopilot systems and full autonomy. Addresses pilot fatigue, attention lapses, and unsafe actions in both commercial and defense aviation.

Key features
  • Real-time AI pilot assistance and workload reduction (APAS, Advanced Pilot Assistance System)
  • Checklist and aircraft configuration management
  • Procedure guidance and pilot safety coaching
  • Context-aware advisory system for high-workload phases of flight
4 more features
  • Open and closed loop pilot assistance autonomy (Level 2 and Level 3)
  • In-cockpit interface designed for both military and commercial flight decks
  • Hardware-light deployment using existing aircraft data, compute, sensors, and connectivity
  • Physiological and environmental monitoring (ARES, Aircrew Readiness and Endurance System) to support crew health and endurance
Technical specifications (5)
  • Software-first, hardware-light architecture, preserves existing aircraft and pilot certification status
  • Level 2 and Level 3 pilot-assistance autonomy classification (Beacon AI's self-driving-derived taxonomy)
  • Designed for dual-use: commercial aircraft and their defense twin aircraft types
  • Edge compute platform with onboard processing capability
  • Compatible with open architecture DOD systems (per SBIR filings)
Certifications and approvals
  • No FAA type certification found, platform is intentionally designed to avoid triggering airworthiness re-certification requirements by remaining software-first and hardware-light

Lighthouse

Lighthouse is Beacon AI's data platform and flight management system. It ingests NOTAMs, weather information, flight briefings, and other mission materials to generate risk assessments and operational insights.

The problem it addresses

Inefficient pre-flight and post-flight workflows, inadequate fleet status visibility, data overload from disparate operational sources, and the lack of AI-driven risk assessment in flight briefing. Addresses delays, operational inefficiencies, and safety gaps in both military and commercial fleet operations.

Key features
  • Flight briefing and debriefing with AI-driven risk assessment
  • NOTAM and weather information ingestion and synthesis
  • Pilot Routing System (PRS), global 4D routing for threat and hazardous weather avoidance with fuel efficiency optimization
  • Fleet monitoring and operational insights
5 more features
  • Live flight support
  • Flight debrief and playback
  • Context-rich streaming data platform (comparable to remote assistance technology used by autonomous vehicle companies)
  • Pre-flight and post-flight analysis automation
  • Pilot workload reduction through automated operational data processing
Technical specifications (4)
  • Cloud-connected data platform with streaming data architecture
  • Integrates multiple data sources: aircraft data, weather, NOTAMs, routing, pilot actions
  • Global 4D routing system (latitude, longitude, altitude, time) for the PRS module
  • Designed for both military and commercial aviation operational workflows
Certifications and approvals
  • No FAA type certification found, operates as a software platform that does not require aircraft airworthiness certification
Product documentation

Profile data from the Aerostack companies register; deployment records from the verified register. Evidence grades: T1 first-party confirmation, T2 credible reporting. See Our approach for how records are graded.

Aerostack tracks AI deployments across airports and airlines, with the published evidence behind each record. Photography is real aviation imagery. Record thumbnails may show the named airport or airline; other photographs do not.
