Chongqing: using AI to monitor the airport while it is being built

Chongqing's documented video-analysis use concerns construction-site safety at an airport expansion, not a proven live airfield prediction service.

The airport as a construction site

An airport expansion creates a temporary but complicated operating environment. Contractors, people, equipment and access routes move daily, often close to existing aviation infrastructure.

At Chongqing Jiangbei, CAAC News described a system combining positioning and geofences with AI video analysis to identify unsafe behaviour during the airport's fifth-phase expansion. It also mentioned face-recognition access gates.

The source establishes an AI-labelled construction-monitoring application. It does not support claims of improved runway safety, airport-wide autonomous surveillance or benefits measured after the expansion.

Spotting an unsafe movement on site

The operational problem

A large expansion involves many workers and vehicles whose movements need to respect restricted zones and safety rules.

What the sources report

CAAC News reported in April 2024 that the Phase 5 project used BeiDou positioning, electronic geofences and AI video analysis to flag unsafe site activity.

Why it matters

The application may improve construction oversight where automated observations reach supervisors who can act.

What remains unproven

The available reporting does not establish current operation after construction, false-alert rates or a measured reduction in incidents.

Position tracking and facial access gates are supporting technologies, not necessarily separate AI deployments with their own observed benefits.

A time-limited deployment should stay time-limited in the story

Chongqing's strongest evidence concerns a construction project at an airport.

That is worth recording, but it should not be recast as a permanent operational AI system without newer evidence.

Live data from the Aerostack register. Status reflects published evidence only. See Our approach for how records are graded.

Aerostack tracks AI deployments across airports and airlines, with the published evidence behind each record. Photography is real aviation imagery. Record thumbnails may show the named airport or airline; other photographs do not.
