Charlotte Douglas is building a sensor-rich pavement digital twin for its future runway, while separately testing biometric arrivals processing. Neither should be presented as a completed AI runway operation.

What is happening on the ground
A runway pavement model could help engineers understand loads and deterioration over its service life.
Charlotte and UNC Charlotte have described a network of around 2,000 embedded sensors for the new fourth parallel runway, scheduled to open in 2027.
That is a construction and future-monitoring programme; an AI prediction model's operating result has not been established.

Charlotte's smart runway is not operational yet
The operational problem
Maintenance staff need reliable evidence of pavement condition before deciding where to inspect or repair.
What the sources report
The airport described its roughly $6.5 million sensor and digital-twin project in April 2026, with runway opening planned for autumn 2027.
Why it matters
If the model works, predictive maintenance may be more targeted than calendar-based inspections.
What remains unproven
The project is reported_unverified for current AI operation, with no measured prediction accuracy or avoided closures.
Evidence supports a reported claim; it does not automatically establish a measured operating benefit.

CBP Enhanced Passenger Processing test with BigBear.ai veriScan at Charlotte Douglas · Pilot
Charlotte Douglas joined US Customs and Border Protection's test programme for Enhanced Passenger Processing of arriving international passengers in early February 2025, the airport said on 11 April 2025.
BigBear.ai listed CLT among the sites using its veriScan system for the process in a release of 17 June 2025.
Evidence supports a reported claim; it does not automatically establish a measured operating benefit.
Editorial judgement
Charlotte's most substantial future evidence should arrive after the runway and its monitoring system enter service.
