Qatar Airways puts a digital human face on its AI assistant
Qatar Airways' Sama, built with UneeQ, is a digital human styled as a member of cabin crew. Version 2.0, launched in March 2024, answers questions in the airline's app and its QVerse virtual platform, and later coverage describes her helping travellers book by conversation. No usage or accuracy figures have been published.

Most airline assistants are text boxes. Qatar Airways gave its own a face and a persona: Sama, an animated cabin crew member built with UneeQ, a specialist in digital humans, whose second version launched at ITB Berlin in March 2024.
Sama also posts on Instagram as a brand ambassador, and a March 2025 piece, labelled as sponsored content, described her helping travellers book flights by conversation. A Thales inflight entertainment order for the A321 NX fleet makes no AI claim and stays in the wider register.

The work behind the evidence

Sama 2.0 answers in the app and in QVerse
The operational problem
Questions about the airline, destinations and travel arrangements are constant and mostly routine, and the assistant that answers them has to fit a premium brand.
What the evidence reports
Qatar Airways said on 6 March 2024 that Sama 2.0, powered by conversational AI, answers questions in real time on frequently asked topics, destinations and travel support through QVerse and the Qatar Airways app, and improves her answers over time through passenger interactions. Babar Rahman, then vice president of marketing, presented the launch as part of the airline's push into new technology.
Operational significance
The persona is a brand decision as much as a technical one. The same conversational system could sit behind a plain chat window; the face is there to make it feel like Qatar Airways.
Evidence still needed
No usage, accuracy or resolution figures have been published, the airline does not say which languages Sama supports, and her booking capability is described only in sponsored coverage.
Other records are shown separately, including non-AI technology and programmes at different stages of deployment. A register entry does not establish a measured AI benefit.
Thales FlytEDGE inflight entertainment for Qatar Airways' A321 NX fleet · Contracted
Qatar Airways and Thales have signed an agreement to equip the airline's new A321 NX fleet with FlytEDGE, PAX International reported on 28 October 2024.

Editorial assessment
Qatar Airways' documented AI is a single customer assistant, distinctive more for its presentation than for any published performance.
The next useful evidence would show whether passengers use Sama to complete tasks, bookings especially, and how often she passes them to a person.
