Frontier's AI chat agent handles about 800,000 customer conversations a month

Frontier Airlines uses an AI chat agent from Cognigy that handles about 800,000 customer conversations a month, by the supplier's count, checking reservations, answering baggage questions and managing refunds. In engineering, Frontier has added Lufthansa Technik's AI analysis of pilots' technical log entries. The airline has published no figures of its own for either.

Frontier is an ultra low cost carrier operating a large Airbus A320 family fleet from its base in Denver (DEN). Both of its documented AI applications come from suppliers.

In December 2025 it added Lufthansa Technik's Predictive Health Analytics, Condition Monitoring and Technical Repetitives Examination modules to its AVIATAR tools, alongside the AMOS maintenance system it is implementing.

The work behind the evidence

01 / Reported · unverified

Customer service by chat at scale

The operational problem

Phone lines handle one conversation per agent, and at peak times that limit strains an airline's customer service operation.

What the evidence reports

Cognigy says in an undated case study that its AI agent handles about 800,000 Frontier conversations a month. It validates reservations, gives links to change them, answers baggage questions, manages refunds and hands conversations to live agents when needed. Leonardo Declich, Frontier's director of customer experience transformation, is quoted as saying that the airline's NPS score rose and that "our average handling time is currently at its historical low, at least in the last five to six years."

Operational significance

At 800,000 conversations a month, the chat agent carries a large share of Frontier's customer contact.

Evidence still needed

The figures are Cognigy's and the case study is undated. Frontier has not published resolution rates, NPS scores or the share of conversations passed to people.

AI reading the technical log

The operational problem

Faults that recur on the same aircraft are hard to spot when they are recorded in different words by different crews.

What the evidence reports

Lufthansa Technik said on 15 December 2025 that Frontier had added the Technical Repetitives Examination module, which analyses flight crews' technical logbook entries by combining AI with Lufthansa Technik's engineering knowledge. The supplier said the tool is in use at more than 20 airlines and has been developed further with Frontier's feedback. Shaun Jensen, Frontier's director of engineering and fleet, said the partnership helps engineering and reliability teams "better forecast and track reliability issues across our various fleets".

Operational significance

Reading free text written by pilots is a natural task for language AI, and repeat defects are a known cause of delays and cancellations.

Evidence still needed

The announcement records a decision to add the module. It gives no date for it going live at Frontier and no reliability results.

Editorial assessment

Frontier's AI is bought rather than built, and the customer chat agent is by far the larger deployment on the evidence published.

Figures from Frontier itself on chat resolution, and on repeat defects caught in the technical log, would make the case on the airline's own numbers.
