Delta's Atlanta ramp uses Baggage AI, a routing tool built in-house that works, in Delta's words, like a ride-sharing app for the 250 ramp agents who move bags between aircraft. It takes real-time flight data, bag locations and connection minutes, builds an optimised driving route for each driver that puts the tightest connections first, and refreshes every two minutes, Delta said on 3 December 2025.
Delta credits its baggage innovations with a nearly 30% improvement in bag transfers. Its Atlanta team handles an average of 87,000 bags a day and more than 110,000 at holiday peaks, and a separate $110 million programme covers physical baggage systems at the airport, not the software.
For 2026 Delta has said it will add ramp congestion and weather to the optimisation, assign drivers automatically to nearby tasks, introduce bag scanning by transfer drivers and expand Baggage AI beyond Atlanta. It has not said whether any of that has started.
