APIDS automatic prohibited-item detection on Frankfurt Airport CT scanners
Deployed
Since 22 January 2026 Frankfurt Airport has used APIDS, automatic prohibited item detection software, in regular operation on more than 50 Smiths Detection CT scanners across all its terminals. Fraport called it a first in Europe, following a test phase at Frankfurt enabled by the European Union and work with the German Federal Police.
The software uses AI to evaluate X-ray images and automatically flag items not allowed in cabin baggage, Fraport says, and the on-site security staff make the final decision. Fraport does not name the software supplier.
Fraport says it has invested around €50 million in new security lanes and CT equipment since it took over responsibility for aviation security checks. Germany-wide certification is the next step described in the release; detection rates and changes in lane throughput have not been published.
