US CBP facial comparison for international arrivals at Raleigh-Durham
Deployed · limited scope
US Customs and Border Protection has used facial comparison for international arrivals at Raleigh-Durham International Airport since 2021, and RDU appears on CBP's list of airports using biometric processing. About 1,600 passengers a day arrive at RDU from abroad and are scanned, GovTech reported on 29 July 2024, and if the comparison flags a mismatch an officer checks the passport by hand.
Miguel Garza, CBP's area port director for Charlotte, told the paper that the process "takes seconds". This is a federal border programme rather than an airport procurement.
