American Airlines Smart Gating machine-learning gate assignment
Deployed
American Airlines built Smart Gating, an in-house machine-learning tool that assigns arriving aircraft to gates, and uses it at Dallas/Fort Worth, Charlotte, Miami, Washington Reagan and Chicago O'Hare, the airline said in November and December 2023. At DFW, American says, it cut taxi times by 20%, about two minutes per flight, saving 11 aircraft-hours a day, and reduced gate conflicts by more than 50%.
At Washington Reagan it cut ramp-block waits by 70%, and at Charlotte it saves about one minute per flight, according to the airline. Systemwide, American credits it with saving 17 aircraft-hours a day, about 1.4 million gallons of fuel a year and more than 13,000 tonnes of CO2; all the figures are the airline's own.
